COLTS AND SAINTS SET FOR SUPER BOWL XLIV.....The storyline for this year's Super Bowl is straightforward: Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning leads the Indianapolis Colts in search of their second title in four years against his father's former team. New Orleans is making its first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
Jay Rood, sports book manager at MGM Mirage properties, opened the Colts a 3.5-point favorite. The early money forced Rood to move the Colts to a 4.5-point favorite. The money line shows Indy a 1-2 favorite with New Orleans offering a return of 17-10 for a straight-up victory. The over-under currently stands at 55.5.
In the AFC Championship Game, Indy overcame a 17-6 second-quarter deficit to score the game's final 24 points in defeating the defensive-minded New York Jets, 30-17. Quarterback Peyton Manning threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns in the come-from-behind victory. Second-year man Pierre Garcon, age 23, and 25-year-old rookie Austin Collie combined for 18 receptions, 278 yards and two touchdowns.
In the NFC Championship Game, New Orleans, benefitting from five Minnesota turnovers, captured a 31-28 overtime victory over the Vikings. The Saints, after winning the overtime coin flip, drove to the Minnesota 22 setting up placekicker Garrett Hartley's 40-yard game-winning field goal. Both teams played sloppy football as Minnesota fumbled six times, while New Orleans committed nine penalties.
